The game of basketball was originally called basket ball, and it was invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891. Naismith probably didn’t know that in 100 years, people would be flying around dunking on each other and making millions while doing it.

Basketballs first-ever game wasn’t played in a fancy gym or stadium but in a YMCA basement using a soccer ball and two peach baskets. We can only imagine how the first shot looked—was it a swish or a miss? Regardless, the sport has come a long way since that humble start.
